INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS 

Editorial policy

Cuadernos de la ALFAL aims to disseminate articles originating in research projects sponsored by  the Association or in ALFALitos organized by the Regional Delegations. It welcomes unpublished  articles on topics related to Spanish, Portuguese or Native American languages, their associated  literatures and cultures. Contributions must be written in Spanish or Portuguese, the official  languages of ALFAL. The journal is addressed to researchers of language and related disciplines,  teachers and readers interested in the topics covered. Cuadernos de la ALFAL is published in May  and November of each year. Access to the journal is free. 

The owner of the rights is the Asociación de Lingüística y Filología de América Latina (ALFAL), a  non-profit corporation. Published texts may be reproduced in whole or in part, provided that their  source and authorship are properly cited. 

Sending collaborations 

The originals for ALFAL Notebooks, in Word format for Windows, should be sent by the Project  Coordinators or the respective ALFALito to Alba Valencia, Director-Editor, at  albavalen@gmail.com. 

Each author of an article submitted to the journal must express, in writing, his/her agreement with  the "Rules of ethical behavior" and declare that he/she is aware of and has strictly applied the  "Instructions for authors". They should also add their academic profile in a maximum of 150 words  (or 10 lines). These documents should be sent by the Coordinators to the Director, in a separate  mail, following the one containing the articles. 

Both the Standards of Ethical Conduct and the Instructions for Authors are available at  www.mundoalfal.org and at www.cuadalfal.com. 

Evaluation and publication 

Contributions are considered in terms of strict compliance with the formal requirements indicated  ("Editorial Guidelines", see below). If the work does not meet these requirements, the author will be  asked, once only, to correct this aspect. Once the correction has been made, if there are still formal  inadequacies, the paper may not be sent for evaluation. The evaluation is carried out by the Editorial  Committee and by 2 pairs external evaluators who may or may not belong to the Scientific Committee of  the journal. 

The reception, acceptance or rejection of the work will be communicated in due time. All  correspondence with authors will be copied to the Coordinators. 

DRAFTING GUIDELINES 

Format. Word format for Windows, letter size, 2 cm margins, Times New Roman font size 11,  single spacing, justified text alignment, no tabs. 

Length. Minimum 10 and maximum 25 pages considering tables, graphs, photos, drawings,  bibliographical references and annexes. 

Title. The title should be centered and in capital letters, in the language in which the article is  written (Spanish or Portuguese, official languages of ALFAL), and in English. On the next line, on  the right margin, in upper and lower case, the name(s) of the author(s), institution(s) and e-mail  address(es). In case of multiple affiliations, only the main institution should be listed. This  institution should be indicated with its full name, not acronyms. For correspondence, the journal  will consider the name of the first author, unless it is announced who will be the correspondent. 

Abstract. Written in the language of the article (Spanish or Portuguese) and in English, no more  than 175 words, indicating objectives, methodology, results and conclusions. Then, write down 3 to  5 keywords. 

Sections. The text must be divided into sections, identified in whole Arabic numerals. Subsections  (if any) should be numbered in decimalized form (1.1., 1.2., 1.3.; 1.1.1., 1.1.2., etc.). Section  headings and subheadings should be written in upper and lower case, and in bold type. 

Use of italics and bold type. Technical terms and words or phrases in a language other than that  used in the body of the paper should be written in italics. Bold type should be used exclusively for  titles and subtitles. 

Illustrations. Tables, graphs, figures (photos, drawings, etc.), must be numbered consecutively and  with their respective legend UNDER the illustration in question. The legend, in turn, will be  preceded by "Table/ Chart/ Graph/ Figure X". Characters in Times New Roman size 10. Maximum  width, 12.5cm. Files must be editable, not in image format. 

Footnotes. Any footnotes to the text should be placed correlatively at the foot of the page in Times  New Roman size 9 and should be indicated in the text by a superscript, without parentheses and, if  necessary, always before the punctuation marks. 

Quotations. Textual quotations of less than three lines should be integrated into the paragraph,  highlighting them with double quotation marks. Longer quotations should be written in size 10,  indented 1.5. After the quotation, the source should be noted in parentheses: author's last name, year  of publication and page(s). Examples: (Rivarola 2004: 802), (Cappelari and Zilles 2002: 197). 

Examples. Examples should be written in Times New Roman size 10, preceded by Arabic numerals  and period, without parentheses. In the text they should be cited by enclosing the number in  parentheses. 

Use of acronyms. The first time it is used, the name to be abbreviated should be written in full and,  in parentheses, the formula "hereinafter" followed by the corresponding acronym. Afterwards, only  the acronym may be written in the text. 

References to author(s) in the text. References to authors in the text should be indicated as follows: 

1. a) If they are part of the text, the author's surname and, in parentheses, the year of publication  of the work and the page of the reference should be noted: Coseriu (1977), Rivarola (2000:  41).
2. b) If they are not part of the text, all data should be noted in parentheses: surname, year and  pages if applicable. E.g.: (Rivarola 2004), (Menéndez Pidal 1960: LI), 
3. c) In the case of two-author volumes, the surnames of both authors should be noted: (Aleza  and Enguita 2010: 161). 
4. e) If it is the work of more than two authors, the surname of the first author is noted followed  by "et al.": (Gougenheim et al. 1956). Bibliographical references should include the names  and surnames (not initials) of all authors. 
5. f) If there is more than one work by the same author, they will be marked in alphabetical  sequence: Lucchesi 2001a, 2001b. 
6. g) To coordinate authors' names, the conjunction "y" will be used in articles written in  Spanish, and "e" if written in Portuguese, regardless of the language in which the text is  written. 
7. h) The same criterion applies to the use of the preposition EN to indicate the book or  collective work where the quoted text is located: "en", if the article is written in Spanish,  and "em", if it is in Portuguese, regardless of the language of the quoted fragment. 
8. i) If an author appears more than once in the bibliographic references, his or her name should  be repeated as many times as necessary, avoiding the use of the line ( ) which means  "the same author of the previous line". 
9. j) All works cited in the article -but only those- should be included in the Bibliographical  References. 

BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES. 

They go at the end of the paper. Authors cited should be noted with their full names. Titles of  books, journals, proceedings, annals, theses, are written in italics and only with initial capital letter.  Titles of articles in journals, proceedings, or chapters in books are written in normal characters, with  initial capital letter only. Page numbers should be noted only in journal articles, book chapters and  conference publications. In the case of unpublished papers, place and date of the corresponding  event should be indicated. 

In the reference to a book (of any kind), the author (or editors), the title of the book, year of  publication, city of publication and publisher CANNOT BE MISSING. If the edition number (2nd,  3rd, etc.) is relevant because the book has undergone important modifications since that edition, it  must be included. In the case of articles in periodicals, the author(s), year of publication of the  journal, title of the article, name of the journal, volume, number, pages among which the article is  found MUST NOT BE MISSING. Some examples:

The placement of two dates, the first in square brackets ([ ]), will be used ONLY for old texts,  published more than 100 years ago, to distinguish them from modern editions of the work, whose  date will be placed after the original. This resource will not be used to cite translations. In this case,  proceed as follows:

Graduate thesis. 

There are only three possible cases of citation of a thesis: 

1. a) The thesis has been published as a book: In this case it is cited as a book. Ex:

Laca, Brenda. 1986. Die Wortbildung als Grammatik des Wortschatzes. Untersuchungen zur  spanischen Subjektnominalisierung, Tübingen, Gunter Narr Verlag. 

1. b) The thesis is only available on the INTERNET: in this case, you must first indicate whether it is  a Doctorate or Master's thesis, then the university where the thesis was defended, then the city  where the university is located, then "[online]" and finally, its location with this formula  "Available at...". Ex: 

Garcia, Talita Storti. 2010. As relações concessivas no português falado sob a perspectiva da  Gramática Discursivo Funcional. 1. c) The thesis is unpublished: in this case, follow the same steps as in the previous case but, after  the city, write "Unpublished". E.g.:
