This study investigates cognitive and linguistic processes related to emotions in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Based on the theoretical framework of social cognition and Theory of Mind research, it is known that children begin to understand and refer to emotions early on (Harris 2007). Thus, the main objective of the study is to provide data to elucidate the processes of understanding, experiencing, conceptualizing, and encoding simple and mixed emotions in BP. The working hypotheses are: (i) the conceptualization of emotions in BP will have a preference for linguistic labels of basic emotions; (ii) there is a distinction in the processes of understanding and experiencing mixed emotions between adults and children who speak BP. The methodology includes two experiments to evaluate these processes in adults and children aged 5 to 11 years. The results indicated that both groups correctly identified the valence of the tested emotions and labeled them in a partially similar manner. It is concluded that although both groups differentiate between understanding and experiencing emotions, there were differences in the performance of the younger children.
