This work addresses the study from a pragmatic eclectic perspective of different types of manuscripts belonging to New Spain. To this end, we analyze petition letters, private letters, relation letters, complaints and self-complaints. Our approach intends, on the one hand, to account for the importance of the communicative event, according to the sender’s purpose and his or her relationship of equality/ inequality with respect to the receiver in the composition of the document; and, on the other hand, it to aims to note how the use of some linguistic forms and constructions are determined by the act of communication itself. Furthermore, each scenario presents structures that are the result of a Western writing tradition. Based on our research we can observe that each type of text is made up of special linguistic structures, as well as certain ritualized constructions.
